Nowadays various kinds of functional foods, including probiotics and prebiotics, are tested for immunological
modulation or activation of the gastrointestinal functions in rodent models as the first-step experiment towards
the human study. Generally, these foodstuffs are expected to influence the host functions through the
compounds metabolized by the intestinal microbes or the microbes themselves.
