The major secondary waste product of municipal wastewater treatment plants is sewage sludge, which mainly
consists of dewatered microbial biomass from the anaerobic digester. This sludge is disposed off by landfilling
or incineration, but can also be used in agriculture after composting if there are no high contents of heavy metals
and organic pollutants in sewage sludge.
