Laboratory diagnosis and epidemiological surveillance of cholera in most of the Brazilian Public Health
Laboratories have been based on phenotypic characteristics, including antibiotic-resistance testing. These
methods are known to be of limited value for predicting the epidemiological potential of Vibrio cholerae strains.
